We remember “that moment” -- September 11, 2001. We recall where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news of the first, then the second, jet crashing into the World Trade Towers. We were glued to news reports as the Pentagon was hit and heroic civilians perished in a field after thwarting their plane’s hijackers. We tried to grasp the unfathomable nature and scope of this tragedy and knew instinctively that something very significant had shifted in our understanding of our world. In the ensuing days, in the midst of all of our stunned grief, we witnessed [...]
At the end of the day, we need to make sure as communicators that folks can actually find us. We’ve noticed a bizarre … and utterly annoying … trend of late. Let’s say we have a client who is coming into a new market and wants to get involved in the local community. We start compiling a list of folks they might want to meet. Logically … at least in our minds … we assume that a good starting point is for us to connect with each organization’s PR person. That should be simple to accomplish, right? Wait, here [...]

Each year, we are lucky to have the opportunity to attend the “Valley Publicity Summit,” hosted by the Valley of the Sun Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. It’s a great gathering of PR folks and media representatives -- producers, editors and reporters – from traditional and online outlets. Beyond getting an opportunity to do some “speed pitching” one on one with these media reps, the summit also hosts a media panel to talk about how the media want to receive story pitches. This year, panelists provided great insights specifically into how they like to receive information. As communication professionals, [...]
Videos are increasingly popular on social media, especially on mobile devices. In fact, the time people spend watching Facebook Live each day has increased by four times and Instagram videos by 80 percent. The most engaging videos can be as short as 15 seconds. Tips for Creating Social Media Videos Use Your Smartphone: You don't need expensive video equipment. Most smartphones can record videos high in visual and audio quality. Consider stabilizing your phone with an inexpensive tripod. If you want to make sure the sound is especially good, invest in a moderately priced lavalier microphone. Capture Attention Early: Videos auto-play on most [...]
On Tuesday, August 8, when the compressor at United Food Bank’s main warehouse freezer broke down, it qualified as a catastrophe. The organization not only incurred an unexpected $10,000 repair bill, it also lost more than 21,000 pounds of vital frozen foods valued in excess of $38,000. Those foods also equated to about three weeks of food assistance to people in need throughout the East Valley and eastern Arizona. teamworks worked with the United Food Bank team to turn this crisis into an opportunity to rally community support. We developed message points and prepped spokespersons, and alerted local TV, radio and [...]

When most folks think of media relations they think the challenge is about getting TV crews out to an event. But that’s when you’re just getting started. Media relations also is about making sure you have quality visuals and spokespersons ready for a quality news segment. We consult with our nonprofit organization clients before we send out any media advisory, asking questions like: What are our visuals? Who are our spokespeople? What set-up do we need to have in place? What are our messages? Recently, we invited FOX10 Arizona Morning, the #1 morning news in town, to come out to United [...]
